The Darfur genocide began based on a multiple of interwoven causes. Tension between the center of the country around the Nile and Darfur, in the last two decades in the twentieth century. A combination of environmental calamity, political opportunism and regional geopolitics was what started the tension.
Sudanese government was unwilling to address human rights crisis in the region, in June 2005, the International Criminal Court started to launch an investigation on human rights violations, as a start to end the genocide. The Sudan government refused to cooperate with the investigations by the ICC.
"On March 4, 2009 Sudanese President Omar al Bashir, became the first sitting president to be indicted by ICC for directing a campaign of mass killing, rape, and pillage against civilians in Darfur."
About four months ago an appeal ruled that the judges made an "error in law." The case was then filed again and judges issued an arrest warrant for Omar al Bashir. Today the arrest warrant is charging Omar al Bashir for three counts of genocide.

Today, Darfur continues to suffer until peace is secured.
Estimates: 2.7 million Darfuris are displaced in camps and 4.7 rely on aid from other countries.
Conflict is critical in Darfur, not only for the people but also the future of Sudan and stability of the entire region.

Early 2008, the AU force was unable to quell the violence and protect civilians. By 2009,
the U.N Security Council had about 27,000 troops and police for a new hybrid force but only
60 percent were on ground.
The AU and the U.N forces have been unable to protect the civilians on the ground; despite
the strong peace-enforcement there is a lack of supplies, funding and equipment by the
international community.

Help:
Little Ripples: Early Childhood Education Little Ripples is a preschool program, tailored to a
population exposed to severe trauma, for the severely under-served families of Djabal and
Goz Amer refugee camps. Solar Cooker Project By manufacturing solar cookers, Darfuri
refugee women use natural energy from the sun to heat meals without the need for long and
often dangerous walks to collect firewood. The International Rescue Committee
Repercussions:
Mass killing, rape and pillage against civilians in Darfur.
Violent attacks, extreme human rights violations and death led Darfur refugees to flee to
Chad.- Health Crisis (unsanitary water (people are consuming water from the lake where
they are also bathing, taking their animals to drink and defecating near) and crowded living
conditions due to overpopulation)).
Severe physical and emotional trauma
The loss of a generation

Resistance:
2003- Two Darfuri rebel movements took up arms against the Sudanese government. The
government responded by unleashing Arab militias known as Janjaweed ("devils on
horseback") to attack villages. 1) The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) 2) The Justice and
Equality Movement (JEM)
