2003
Rebels in Darfur rise up against the government claiming that their region is being neglected by Khartoum. The government of Sudan and the Sudan’s people liberation movement are trying to work on ending the Second Sudanese Civil War, which has ravaged Sudan since 1983.
2004
The Janjaweed militia moves into the western region of Darfur where they begin systematically killing non Arabs, in hopes of avoiding the situation hundreds of thousands of refugees flee to Chad. The situation was officially declared a genocide by United States secretary of state Colin Powell September 9th.
2005
On August 1st the vice president and a former rebel leader named John Garang is killed in a plane crash, Garang's death results in deadly clashes in the capital between southern Sudanese and northern Arabs. January 9th the government of Sudan and Sudan’s people liberation movement sign the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to end the decades long Second Sudanese Civil War.
2006
The United Nations call for a peace keeping force in Sudan but the government neglects the idea saying that it would compromise Sudanese sovereignty. Near the end of 2006 there were up to two hundred and thirty five thousands Darfur refugees.
2007
Violence between the Government of Sudan and rebel groups is increasing leading to the expansion of peace keeping groups throughout Darfur.
2009
An arrest warrant is issued for the president of Sudan, Omer al Bashir on account of mass killing, rape and pillage against civilians in Darfur. The genocide in Darfur didn't end in 2009 it is still a problem to this day.
